Magazine Listings

This is what I'm emailing to the magazines we want a listing in. Is it ok, I've never placed a listing before so don't know how to go about the email and cant find info on it on the site so hope this is ok...

To Whom It May Concern,

We are 3rd year Digital Photography students at the London South Bank University and at present we are preparing to curate an exhibition from the 5th till 11th December’07.
Our aim is to involve the local community of Hackney in taking photographs of their immediate environment. In order to encourage people to look at their surroundings differently we are promoting photography from digital cameras as well as mobile phones. The collaborative work is a progress between students and community members and will be the body of work displayed. This means that the exhibition will be a growing piece of work using images from both parties.

Listing: Marie Lloyd Bar (upstairs) of Hackney Empire 289 Mare St,
E8 1EJ 'Hackney in Focus' 5-11Dec

Can I make a couple of suggestions…..find out before you send it how each place you are sending it to lists information and then tailor yours to fit, so:

1) If you are sending information to a magazine that only lists exhibition title, artists, venue, date and opening times then only send in that appropriate information, because otherwise they will not bother to go through all the information and will not list it. So just send minimal factual information and ask them to add it to their December listings (if monthly) or for the appropriate days (if weekly). So before you send the info check what info their listings usually have.

2) However, if you are wanting to give information for a small section ‘article’ in a newspaper, radio stations, journalists, reviewers etc then yes the more expanded version you have written is fine…however find out the name of the person you are sending it to or at least the name of the ‘section/department.

3) I’ve made some minor changes to your text:

We are 3rd year Digital Photography students from London South Bank University and are curating an exhibition titled Hackney in Focus taking place at the Hackney Empire from the 5th until 11th December 2007.
We will be involving the local community of Hackney asking them to take photographs of their immediate environment for submission to the exhibition. By promoting photography from digital cameras as well as mobile phones, we hope to encourage people to look at their surroundings differently.

The project will be a collaborative process between students and the local community and the photographic display comprising images taken by both the community members and students will grow throughout the exhibition.
